Dialogues

Introduction Picture In 1990, the Harvard Mahoney Neuroscience Institute began holding public forums on the progress of brain research. "Dialogues on the Brain," sixth in the series, took place at the Harvard Medical School in Boston.

David Mahoney, Daniel Tosteson and Gerald Fischbach
Daniel Tosteson, Dean of the Medical School, welcomed the standing-room-only audience of Boston-area residents and guests from other states. Gerald Fischbach, president of the Institute and head of the Department of Neurobiology at the Medical School, led off with an overview of neuroscience. David Mahoney, chairman of the Institute's governing council, closed the proceedings with brief remarks.

Participating in the dialogues were Drs. Marilyn Albert and Huntington Potter (Memory Loss, Aging, and Alzheimer's Disease); Howard Shaffer and Steven Hyman (Drugs and the Brain); and Edward Cassem and Joseph Coyle (Depression). A panel of science reporters--Anastasia Toufexis of Time magazine, Nils Bruzelius of The Boston Globe, and Paul Raeburn of the Associated Press--questioned the speakers. Audience questions followed the presentations.
