The stomach may normally show low-level activity similar to the liver, and is usually identified by its position and configuration. Uptake is usually within the walls of the stomach, best observed in the transaxial plane. It is usually a lowand diffuse and may be related to contraction of gastric muscles and/or low-level mucosal inflammation. Hiatal hernias are often associated with inflammation and increased uptake that must be differentiated from a mass in the lower thorax.

GE junction:
Often a small focus of uptake can be seen at the gastro-esophageal junction. This may also be related to reflux and inflammation. Additionally the increased activity may be related to normal physiological activity of the lower esophageal sphincter.
