CT showed a large residual mass (arrows) and a 1x2 cm lymph node (arrow) just to the right of the esophagus. By CT criteria, the lymph node is negative for cancer.
FDG study shows a large amount of uptake in the lung mass (L). There is some uptake in the lateral wall of the left ventricle (H) on this fasting study. There is faint uptake in a right para esophageal lymph node in the mediastinum (M). Subdiaphragmatic activity is seen in the stomach and the colon.

Persistant uptake in the para esophageal lymph node (M) indicates that surgical cure is unlikely, and the patient was referred to radiation therapy.
