Case 3
Clinical History:
A 20 year-old Asian female was admitted to the hospital for the evaluation of
chronic osteomyelitis of the left tibia. Eighteen years prior to admission,
the patient had suffered a puncture wound of the left leg, followed by a severe
febrile illness which resolved without antibiotics. Immediately prior to
admission, there had been several episodes of swelling and pain with no
evidence of drainage. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 6 mm per hour,
with a normal white count and differential.
